Good Friday Reflection: The Passion of the Lord at Maula Cathedral

Following the Way of the Cross, the community at Maula Cathedral gathered for the Passion of the Lord, led by Father Peter Makina. The liturgy was marked by a profound moment of silence and symbolism known as the Prostratio.

The Meaning of the Prostratio

At the beginning of the Good Friday liturgy, the priest lies face down before the altar in absolute silence. This "total surrender" is a physical prayer that speaks where words fall short.

Aspect

What it Expresses

Humility

Acknowledging our nothingness before the Creator.

Sorrow

Mourning the suffering and sacrifice of Jesus.

Repentance

A collective plea for the forgiveness of sins.

Abandonment

Placing the weight of the world entirely into God’s hands.

In Simple Words

The Prostratio is one of the most powerful silent prayers in the entire liturgy. It is the Church using the body to say:

“Lord, we are nothing without You. Have mercy on us.”

This act of total surrender reminds the faithful that before the mystery of the Cross, the most fitting response is often humble, heartfelt silence.
