On Sunday 4 January 2026, the solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lilongwe, His Grace George Desmond Tambala officially closed the Holy Door at Maula Cathedral.
This marks the conclusion of a one-year Jubilee Year of hope a special period of grace and mercy in the Catholic Church, bringing to an end the Jubilee of Hope that Pope Francis began on December 24, 2024.
In his message, the archbishop emphasized that it is now time to live out the fruits of the Jubilee in practical ways across all levels of the Church

In his speech, His Grace reminded the congregation of the three pillars of Christian life: faith, hope, and love. While the Jubilee has highlighted the importance of hope, he urged believers to also deepen their faith and to hope for love. He stressed that when Christians are firmly rooted in these three virtues, they will be better equipped to address the pressing challenges facing the nation, including hunger, conflict, and poverty.

The archbishop also highlighted the importance of living out the Gospel through acts of charity, forgiveness, and active participation in the life of the Church, urging everyone to remain steadfast in their faith and witness to God’s love in their daily lives.
Maula Cathedral Parish Priest, Father Francis Lekaleka expressed gratitude to Archbishop Tambala for guiding the faithful through the Jubilee celebrations.

Father Lekaleka reminded the faithful that the spirit of the Jubilee must continue beyond its formal closure
"Whatever we did is not just ending when the archbishop closes the door today. It is just the beginning. One particular example is forgiveness. We have several people we need to forgive. When we go out there, it is your turn now to continue forgiveness, extending that arm of reconciliation.”
He urged Christians to embody the Jubilee spirit in their daily lives, especially through forgiveness, echoing the words of the Lord’s Prayer:
“Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.”
Throughout the Jubilee Year, various groups and communities celebrated in diverse ways, with Archbishop Tambala’s leadership opening doors for participation and spiritual renewal.
The faithful were encouraged to carry forward the blessings received, ensuring that the Jubilee becomes a foundation for ongoing reconciliation and unity.
