Women from various Christian denominations gathered at the Maula Cathedral of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lilongwe today, 25th April 2026, to celebrate the World Day of Prayer.
This year’s theme, "I Will Give You Rest, Come," was taken from Matthew 11:28-30 and was prepared by the World Day of Prayer Committee of Nigeria.
The Guest of Honor, Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Honorable Mary Navicha, addressed the gathering with a powerful message. She reminded the women that prayer must lead to action, especially in protecting the vulnerable.

Minister Navicha spoke strongly against the violence facing elderly women in Malawi, many of whom are wrongly accused of witchcraft.
"Growing old is a blessing from God, not a crime," Minister Navicha said. "We must protect our elderly and ensure they enjoy their lives to the fullest. I call upon all faith leaders to help stop these brutal attacks."
This year’s program featured stories from Nigeria, highlighting challenges like poverty, widowhood, and persecution.
Rose Kalizang’oma, the Chairperson for the English Service, noted that Malawian women face many of the same struggles as their Nigerian sisters, including gender-based violence and economic hardship.

"The message today is that we are not alone," Kalizang’oma said. "When we are burdened, Jesus is there to help us."
The event also marked a special moment of unity as Faustina Eke, the CWA Nigeria President at Maula Parish, joined the local prayers for the first time. She expressed her joy at seeing women come together, stating, "When women pray, God hears our cries."

The atmosphere was lifted by vibrant performances from several choirs, including the Maria Consolata Choir from St. Kizito-Chigoneka Catholic Parish and the Lingadzi CCAP Choir.
As the event ended, the participants have been encouraged to go back to their communities as "living extensions of Christ," working together to bring comfort, justice, and economic growth to Malawi.
